You are what we call a Thursday's Child.
You see what others cannot.
Our next installment in our Mini Series program will be an amazing game by Free League Publishing: Vaesen.
Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying is based on the work of Swedish illustrator and author Johan Egerkrans, Vaesen presents a dark Gothic setting steeped in Nordic folklore and old myths of Scandinavia.
The old folk tales often expressed dark and mature themes, and thus the Vaesen RPG explores such themes as well. This is a horror game and not suitable for children, and adult players should also participate only at their own discretion.
Across 4 sessions, we will create characters as a group, and embark on 4 short investigations. The first of which will be the shortest, to allow for character creation.
Four Bi-Weekly Sessions, Mondays from 6:00 to 9:00pm
Monday, September 30 - A Strange Invitation
Characters meet at a mansion, but they aren't alone
Monday, October 14 - The Sliver of the Sea
Head to the coast to investigate the murder of a priest
Monday, October 28 - A Wicked Secret
A long trip to the north woods reveals things aren't as they seem in this remote and isolated village
Monday, November 11 - The Devil on the Moor
On a Danish island, investigate a tale of terror in the windswept autumn moors
Gameplay is meant to focus on relationships and investigation. The tone struck will be conducive to horror storytelling: sensory details, theater of the mind, experimentation with pacing, and creative solutions to challenging situations.
Our goal with these mini series is to highlight amazing game systems, but with a level somewhere in between a casual learn-to-play session, and a months'-long campaign. And where it might be easy to find a group of players to welcome you to a session of D&D 5e, it can be challenging to find people playing a different system.
The format is also intended to highlight that amazing stories can be told over a shorter timeframe. Television series used to have 26 episodes in a season, and now they feel like 8-hour long movies. A mini series tries to tell a story over a few installments, even if there are story lines left open to explore further.
Finally, some systems show character development through storytelling instead of leveling. So in a mini series, not every BBEG is epic, and not every RPG hero is godlike. The stories and characters may be smaller, but that doesn't make them less meaningful.
That's okay! Our company was founded by a teacher! Teaching is at our core, and we can teach anyone interested as we play. While that can sometimes feel daunting for a new player, let us worry about the lessons so YOU can focus on the fun!
